I have a Pinterest board called "My Style" on there you will find all manner of beautiful vintage clothing that would look perfect on a wood nymph. I'm no wood nymph. I'm 5 ft 11 and a D cup. It should be called "My Dream Style" because I have never, nor will I ever be able to successfully pull off any of these clothes. Well maybe the earrings, I have very cute ears...

I ogle the fashion bloggers at the blogging conferences in the same way. I sit there in my Jeans West jeans and Katie's jacket with the scarf my sister knitted me out of feather wool and watch them confidently waft by with their cute little skirts, tiny weeny belts, daring shoes and lofty hair-do's. But funnily enough, despite all this oggly behaviour, I have no desire to make this my passion. I like to look nice, but I'm also a scrouge who umm's and arr's over anything that exceeds $49.95. I also live in regional town with little variety to speak of *insert London, New York, Melbourne envy here*.
I wonder if I were a wood nymph would I feel differently? Who knows, as I will never subscribe to Kate Moss's notoriously stupid statement that "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels". She's obviously never tasted my mothers chocolate saucy pudding.
What's your fashion style? Does the dream, match up with reality?

I have the same thing with houses. With fashion I only buy 2nd hand so whatever I find predicts my style. X
ReplyDeleteI'll bet you have a lovely style.
DeleteI have a similar board on Pinterest.... Its called ' things I would wear if I had the money ( and the body ) '. Nothing wrong with a bit of fantasy fashion for those of us who can't afford the real deal!
ReplyDeleteI think I need to rename my board something like that!
DeleteI love pretty clothing. I like some "stylish" clothing (in the eye of the beholder and all that). There's a look I wish I had, but I don't. I don't have the body shape for it and most likely never will. That's ok. And $49.95? Anything about $25 gets umm'd and ahh'd by my! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling flush now, and truth be told I probably baulk at most things over $35!
DeleteI love this post. I would totally envy your friend too. Some people have the taste, time and funds to look amazing all the time. I am a cheap arse and lazy but I try. I guess it helps that I aren't blessed with a generous bosom. Rachel x
ReplyDeleteYou're a wood nymph then? For fashions sake I would like to be one of those. And I would like magical powers too, because what is a wood nymph without magical powers? Just some stinky creature that hangs out in the woods I imagine...yes I have been drinking a little!
DeleteI agree with you completley. I buy all my clothes at Kmart except at christmas when I buy a dress for christmas day or the just jeans update every couple of years. I am pretty simple in cheap singlets, Jeans, Khakis (or one of my christmas dresses if it calls for it). I aim for comfort. And my hair gets a cut twice a year because I hate hairdresser chit chat. But my board is similar, lots of women without my chunky thighs: http://pinterest.com/Poochella/fashion-and-beauty/
ReplyDeleteWe should shop together Rachel!
DeleteYes, I am not into spending megabucks on fashion either. There are lots of fashions I love but really don't suit my apple shaped, size 14/16 figure. C'est la vie!
ReplyDeleteCést la vie indeed Janet! We make the best of what we've got :-)
DeleteI love this post and can completely relate. I always wish that I could look gorgeous polished all the time instead of a frumpy Mum ! I to have a friend that always looks the part.....
ReplyDeleteOh well, I will just keep dreaming I guess.

We will dream together Beck and one day, maybe one day when the children have left home and we have won the lottery we can leave our frumpiness behind!
DeleteI know what you mean, I baulk at spending money on things above that $50 also! I adore the look of those vintage necklaces, oh and that dress. Wouldn't it be nice to a. fit it, b. have somewhere to wear it, c. be able to afford. One day I hope to get my spunk back until then I'll stay submerged in the background. Emily
ReplyDeleteHaving somewhere to wear it is a very good point. That's what I like about my friend, she chooses to look killer all the time regardless of where she is, I'm afraid I just don't have the energy for it.
DeleteI think every girl has one of those pinterest boards. I lie and tell myself that if I lost weight I would totally wear those clothes. Ha!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteLOL - my dream definitely doesn't match up with my reality !!! It would be great if I had unlimited money, unlimited time, a personal chef and trainer - but until that happens, I'm going to have to stick with my Jeans West jeans, Target/Big W tops or jackets !!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day !

You and me both!
DeleteI could of written his exact post! I am 5ft with DD natural knockers. I am a tailors best friend, everything has to be altered in some way. While I have the same Pinterest board which is really a dream board I do like to shop and try new styles - but this is not always successful :(
ReplyDeleteWe just gotta work with what we got and you my dear have impressive knockers!
DeleteI dream about being able to shop without looking at price tags, and to fit into clothes that are stylish for my body frame!!
ReplyDeleteBe nice to find a store that caters for the Real Mum's, that is up to date with the fashion world but doesn't cost an arm n leg...Love the idea of a dream style.
Perhaps you should set up a clothing store that fits this brief and we can all come and shop with you :-)
DeleteI have a My Style pintrest page as well, but it's got glitter, glam and shoes. Full of glorious things I WILL fill my wardrobe with one day :)
ReplyDeleteI have my fair share of glitter and glam too. One can never have enough bling and I hope one day it will fill your wardrobe!
DeleteThe lace head band is stunning on dark hair. I love the pictures of all the things, but could never make them work myself. I do love some good old retro, and accessorising. Being a shorter, hourglassy type, raised wedges and a full skirt is great. I have lovely things, but what I desperately need is to cull all the old jammed-in crap from around them so I can FIND them all.
ReplyDeleteI recently did a HUGE cull. It was a great thing to do, I can actually see what I have and I have kept the things I love most.
DeleteOh I hear you! As long as I have a pair of jeans and a top that doesn't make me look like the side of a house then I am happy!
ReplyDeleteI do feel a bit frumpy at work at times though. At not quite 30, I am one of the more experienced teachers in the school, and there are some VERY trendy and immaculately dressed women at my work.
Though I suppose if I didn't have a mortgage or kids I could prob spend a fortune on clothes too!
Visiting very late from IBOT
I just wear whatever I like and I absolutely love clothes. You think a D cup is hard - try a G! ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what my style is - a little bit curvaceous, a little bit retro, a little bit classic, and quite a bit of bonkers.
I've been told before that I overdress for the occasion but life is to be lived and clothes are to be worn! :) I buy most of my clothes from op shops and markets and designer outlets, which is how I can afford my "label" stuff. If you can find an Oroton bag for $10 or Armani flats for $5 or a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress for $50, then why not?! Those are Big W prices!
I love the concept of high-low dressing, where you mix designer pieces with budget staples.
