I went out to dinner last night with some old school friends I haven't seen for about 14 years. This makes me feel very old - but that is a story for another day!
In 14 years the topic of conversation has changed. We are all mothers with partners, with different work and living arrangements. We talked about the merits and challenges of the lives we had created and why we made the decisions we had, particularly when it comes to caring for our children.
We also reflected on the fragility of life in light of our own experiences and those we have known over the years. What we all know is that there are no guarantees in life, while we make the best of plans they can be waylaid by accident, illness, injury and even death.
While making the obligatory tag team to the bathroom my friend and I discussed the relationship we encourage our children to have with their father, their extended family and friends knowing that if anything happened to us, they needed to source comfort from people other than us.

It occurred to me that if anything happened to me, my husband would need to sell our house and the Squishy would need to go into full-time care. I can't imagine how difficult this would be at such a fragile time in their lives.
