40 simple ways to live more sustainably

This week I'm talking sustainability. Read here to learn more. It is an important word to add to our vocabulary, but moreover should be embraced as a series of actions we all must take if we want to leave something positive for our children. Here are 40 simple tips that can become daily actions. I encourage you to choose 10 and focus on them for the coming week. Make these actions into habits and teach these habits to your children.

Energy saving tips

  1. Turn off lights, appliances and equipment at the powerpoint when not in use.
  2. Install energy-efficient compact light globes.
  3. Insulate, draught seal and shade windows to reduce your homes heating and cooling requirements.
  4. Install water efficient shower heads and take shorter showers.
  5. Wash clothes in cold water.
  6. If you have a second fridge, turn it off until really needed, or dispose of it thoughtfully.
  7. Hang clothes on the line and refrain from using your dryer.
  8. Switch to Green Power where available.
  9. Buy energy efficient appliances as required.
  10. Section off areas of your home when heating and cooling, to regulate temperature more efficiently.

Waste reduction tips

  1. Reuse or re-purpose household items in preference to or before recycling.
  2. Buy recycled products when you shop. Use your local charity shops.
  3. Recycle whenever and whatever, even if it means transporting recyclables home.
  4. Refuse plastic bags, use canvas and calico bags instead.
  5. Refuse unnecessary packaging and materials.
  6. Avoid one-use plastics e.g. small yoghurt containers, buy in bulk and transport in reusable containers.
  7. Refrain from buying bottled water.
  8. Refuse junk mail. Purchase a 'No Junk Mail' sticker for your mailbox.
  9. Receive and pay your bills electronically.
  10. Use natural cleaning products. Check out this link for easy and effective cleaning solutions.
  11. Downsize by holding a garage or car boot sale - give others the opportunity to treasure your trash.
  12. Divert garden and food waste from landfill to compost.
  13. Start a worm farm.
  14. Dispose of waste correctly. If in doubt, consult your local Council.
  15. Join a litter reduction or environmental care group and contribute to the health of your broader community.

Travel smart

  1. Use public transport where possible.
  2. Ditch the car and walk or ride.
  3. Plan your trips to minimise the number of times you need to use your car.
  4. Arrange to car pool to and from work and school.
  5. Offset you cars emissions.

Caring for yourself and your family

  1. Buy organic produce.
  2. Buy locally grown produce.
  3. Grow your own vegetables even if it's just in pots.
  4. Reduce the amount of processed food you consume.
  5. Eat less meat, eat more vegetables.
  6. Eat less, move more.
  7. Have regular health checks.
  8. Join a community group or sporting club and meet new friends.
  9. Learn new skills and set new challenges.
  10. Plan your 'down-time'. Rest is important.

I would love to hear how you go...

I try to incorporate many of those ideas, and although I am far from perfect, I feel good about many of my choices. This less than perfect woman, is your newest follower.
