I checked my Facebook this afternoon and in the feed was a page called 'Naked Selfies'. It came up in my feed because two people I know 'liked' the page. On further inspection, I found a page, administered by a man requesting people send photos of themselves naked. Women were obliging sending not only suggestive pictures, but pictures of themselves engaged in sexual acts - amateur porn. The site has over 5000 fans and apparently escapes the notice of Facebook (though breast feeding images are removed promptly - go figure).
I am no prude, but it saddens me, that so many young girls are prepared to debase themselves in this way and for what?
Is it feminism gone awry? "I am woman, hear me roar, look at my twat". If so, the point has been missed.
In effect, the reasons are much more complex. Too complex to explore here.

As for those who gain enjoyment from perusing sites such as this. My message to you is the same.
And a word of warning, we do not know the age of the young girls submitting these images. To view images of under-age girls, to publicly 'like' images of under-age girls makes you guilty of an offence. How does the word 'paedophile' sit with you?
Food for thought - I hope.

I saw the exact same thing on my Facebook feed this week too. I was shocked considering women can't even show breastfeeding pics but somehow that has slipped through the cracks. Couldn't have said it better myself.
ReplyDeleteIf it appears again - report it. I'm going to.
DeleteWell said. That is scary. How on earth did that get through the Facebook net? As much as I love the Internet and social media, what people put out there never ceases to amaze me - and sadly, often amaze me in a negative sense.
ReplyDeleteAgreed Mandie. I just keep thinking of the 13 year olds and younger who see that suddenly appear in their newsfeed.
DeleteYou make a really good point Bree and well said. I'm not sure some of these young girls have the maturity or foresight to understand that these pics will probably haunt them long after they've finished believing it was appropriate behaviour. Self-belief and self-worth - two states of mind many of these girls are sadly lacking. And for the perverts promoting this behaviour - shame on them.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't have said it better myself!
DeleteMy god! That is ludicrous! Breastfeeding is offensive but amateur porn gets 5000 likes? Shame on you Facebook!
ReplyDeleteIt's ridiculous isn't it.
DeleteI agree with this! I hate that Facebook now shows things that your friends "like" and "comment" on...It's sooo annoying and It's causing me to want to delete my account.
ReplyDeleteOn another more important note, you're right. I can't get over how much SEX is advertised everywhere and it has such an influence on kids and teens. It really does put a great deal of fear in my eyes for our children and children's children. Where did we go wrong?
Agreed. It plays so large when there are so many more important things to focus our time and energy on. It is frightening to have to raise our children in this environment - to send good messages when so much of this is about.
Deleteoh my gosh- that is disturbing
ReplyDeleteXo Megan
It is indeed Megan.
DeleteEwwwwww. Definitely worth contacting them over the paedophile angle - that should make them sit up. Now, if only they'd sort out the breastfeeding issue. You can't even see boob in most breastfeeding photos!
ReplyDeleteI really don;t understand the breast feeding issue. Makes no sense to me whatsoever!
DeleteReally shocking Bree! It is amazing what some persons are willing to subject themselves to. I hope if there are young girls involved somehow it will be stopped quickly.
ReplyDeleteAgreed Judy.
DeleteI have seen the same thing in my newsfeed. I actually think there's a few pages with the same name circulating. I was pretty shocked, and curiosity got the better of me, clicking to have a look. The comments on the pics were disgusting. Saying the women had "fat asses" or saying they need something that I won't mention.
ReplyDeleteChrissie xx
Charming isn't it!
DeleteWow. I haven't seen this come up in my FB feed - thank goodness! Although, from some other 'groups' I've seen floating around cyberspace, I'm not in any way suprised. Good on you for putting such an important message - and a valuable lesson - out there. X
ReplyDeleteThanks Bec. I have had a really good response to this post.
DeleteGreat post Bree - in all our messages to teenage girls about this stuff, it is sometimes lost that there are lots of grown women still seeking public approval and attention for their naked body as well.
ReplyDeleteYes, turning 18 does not mean we are suddenly gifted with wisdom, self worth and are capable of making good decisions.
DeleteIt seems like madness that breastfeeding photo's get pounced on, but this is OK? What kind of message is that to people? What does it say about society that feeding your child is dirty, but 'naked selfies' are perfectly acceptable?
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I only hope enough reports will see it removed sooner rather than later.
DeleteIt's really disturbing... how can facebook allow this sort of thing when breastfeeding photos are deemed offensive? it's crazy... and it makes me very cross.
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy alright.
DeleteWell said, and like everyone else I'm surprised Facebook aren't cracking down on it. I guess people see it as their '15 minutes of fame'. What a shame if that is the only way they feel they can gain attention. The casual 'liking' of the page is worrying too though, as you eloquently point out. Nice post.
ReplyDeleteSadly it isn't 15 minutes of fame. There is a permanent technological foot print. I'm sure they will live to regret it.
DeleteThat's so, so, sad. It astounds me how these girls don't seem to realise that the internet is permanent. And shame on Facebook. Where are they when they need to police the serious stuff ???!!!
ReplyDeleteShame on Facebook indeed. I just think of all the 13 year olds and under who have this sort of thing pop up in their feed.
DeleteI haven't seen it and I'm glad as I'd be furious - much of my working world involves dealing with the Facebook (or text message) regrets of teenage girls. Trying to explain the concept of a digital footprint to a teen is hard work as the future is just not real to them yet. I hope it gets shut down soon!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you do for a living? I also work with young people.
DeleteOh that is so shocking. Excellent post - I will report it too if I see it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mez
DeleteBree, thank you for being gutsy enough to speak up about it. I too will report it if I see it. It's sad that people are becoming complacent and nonchalant with issues like this in these times.
ReplyDeletewonder why FB has banned that site? Surely it should be against there very strange rules?
ReplyDeleteAnd it is so sad...why do women think they have to expose themself like that online?
